Frequently Asked Questions on Sphynx Cats
What is the correct spelling of Sphynx (Sphinx) cats?
The correct spelling is SPHYNX . Many people spell it as the Egyptian Sphinx (cat body with a human head).
Do sphynx cats come in different colours?
Yes, there are many variations.
What do sphynx cats eat?
The Sphynx cat generally will try most foods, including yours! Some of the foods that your kitten has been introduced to are; good quality kitten pouches such as Whiskas, tuna chunks in brine, sardines in tomato sauce, cooked chicken and fish, and a good quality dry kitten food such as Iams or Hills. Water must always be available.
Are they allowed outside?
Sphynx are indoor cats. If you must take them outside, do so for only for short periods and always supervised. It must be remembered that the Sphynx has no fur to protect it from cold or the rays of the sun. Please note that because the Sphynx is so unusual and possibly unique in the area where you live, it may be stolen.
How often should I bath them?
I recommend every two weeks for kittens. As your cat gets older, and especially during summer, bathing should take place at least once a week. This does depend on the skin of the individual cat, some sphynx cats (sphinx cats ) require more frequent bathing than others. I use Johnson's baby shampoo at bath time for younger cats, and use Dermcare shampoo (available from your vet) as they get older.
Should I give them milk/cream?
Milk should be regarded as a food not a drink, indeed caution should be exercised with milk/cream since most cats (especially sphynx cats) cannot digest the lactose and it will act as a powerful laxative! Should you feel the need to offer your sphynx kitten milk or cream, try evaporated milk mixed with a little water or Cimicat (available from your vet). You could also use Whiskas cat milk, but watch out for any reaction.
How often do I cut their nails?
It is a relatively easy job and should be done every week. If your kitten objects, try wrapping a towel around them, that way you only have to deal with one leg at a time. Purchase good quality nail cutters. Your vet will help if required.
If I have allergies, can I keep a Sphynx cat?
If you are allergic to pet hair, yes. My advice would be to come and visit, see how you get on with my cats.
Do they get on with other animals?
Generally speaking, yes. There is no definitive answer, it really depends on personalities. Sphynx cats (sphinx cats) do like to be ‘in charge.' One of our smallest sphynx kittens, ‘Cardyboy' went to a home with a Dalmatian and 8 Bengal 's; within a week he was apparently ‘the boss' and using the dog as his bed!
Are they good with children?
Sphynx are very loving cats and regard themselves as part of the family. Caution must be exercised with very young children. Sphynx cats like to ‘bed down' against something warm, you could find your cat in bed with your baby.
Are they good companions?
Your Sphynx cat will demand your attention, especially when you sit and relax; they are always looking for a lap to bed down on and do not like to be left for long periods. With most pets, you get out what you put in.
Will my sphynx kitten be inoculated?
Your kitten will be fully inoculated and will require a booster in a year's time. Your kitten will also be wormed, litter trained and neutered.
How old will my sphynx kitten be when I take it?
Kittens will be at least 14 weeks old before release. The reason for this is that I like to make sure that the kitten has no adverse reaction to final inoculations or neutering.
How long will I have to wait for a kitten?
This really depends on how long the waiting list is and the size of litters. Sphynx generally have 3-7 kittens in a litter. Please note that I prefer buyers to visit rather than solely deal with people on the telephone or e-mail. I appreciate that distance is an issue, but by actually seeing the cats and kittens you can properly decide if our Sphynx cats are for you.
How often do I feed my sphynx kittens?
Your sphynx kitten will be on three meals a day, with kitten Iams/Hills biscuits available at all times. Cut back to two meals a day when your kitten is five months old.
What are the cats characters like?
They are very loving and playful and all have their own characteristics. For example, some of my cats; ‘Posh,' she was my first Sphynx cat (sphinx cat), she is thoroughly spoilt and sees herself as the ‘matriarch' of the house. It is said that you don't own a Sphynx cat, they own you, and this is certainly true with Posh. ‘ Willow ' is a thief; she steals anything from elastic hair bands to jewelry. Buffy likes to play a game in the morning when I'm cleaning the litter trays; she will ‘ambush' me by jumping onto my back as I bend down and ‘capturing' me.
Will you sell me sphynx cats for breeding?
No. My sphynx cats are sold only as pets.
